Food Preservation

Gardeners and other lovers of fresh produce are often interested in extending the season's bounty by learning more about preserving fruits and vegetables at home.  Ohio State University Extension Family and Consumer Sciences teach the basics of home canning and preservation through demonstrations and workshops.  We emphasize the science behind preservation so than everyone who cans or freezes fresh fruits and vegetables understands why certain procedures must be followed precisely to ensure a high-quality, safe product that they and their family can enjoy.

Home Food Preservation educational offerings typically address:

  • Basic food safety principles.
  • Proper home canning equipment including how to use a water bath canner and a pressure canner.
  • Canning fruits and vegetables.
  • Freezing fruits and vegetables.
  • Drying fruits and vegetables.

 Mental Health Resources

At OSU Extension Muskingum County, we are committed to supporting the mental health and well-being of our community. Through partnerships and statewide initiatives, we offer access to a wide range of mental health resources tailored to meet the needs of individuals and families across Muskingum County.

We connect residents to vital services such as:

  • Ohio CareLine: 24/7 emotional support at 1-800-720-9616
  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988 for immediate help
  • Crisis Text Line: Text “MHFA” to 741741 for confidential support

We offer training on mental health such as:

  • Trauma Informed Approaches: Becoming “trauma-informed” means recognizing that people often have many different types of trauma in their lives. People who have been traumatized need support and understanding from those around them. Often, trauma survivors can be re-traumatized by well-meaning caregivers and community service providers. The Ohio Trauma-Informed Approaches project seeks to educate our communities about the impact of trauma on clients, co-workers, friends, family, and even ourselves. Understanding the impact of trauma is an important first step in becoming a compassionate and supportive community.
