Steer Weigh In
Attention 4-H and FFA Junior Fair exhibitors taking a market steer project in 2010
The following is information for 2010 market steer projects. This information is being sent to 4-H and FFA exhibitors who had steers and feeder calves in the 2008 project year. All market steers to be exhibited at the 2010 Muskingum County Fair must come to this steer registration day.
Steer registration and weigh-in will be held Saturday, December 19, 2009 and take place at Muskingum Livestock Sale Barn, on Malinda Street in Zanesville. Weighing and tagging will be done from 8:00 – 11:00 a.m.
Options on number you can weigh-in:
Option #1: Member can bring either 1 or 2 steers and register them in member’s name.
Option #2: Siblings may each register 1 steer in their name. One additional may
be registered as a “family” backup to be used by one of the siblings if
necessary.
- Steers must be on a halter at registration and should be halter broke.
- All ear tags must be removed from the right ear before registration.
Steers must be owned, being cared for and in continuous possession of the member by weigh-in date (December 2009).
All steers must have been born after January 1, 2009. They are to be dehorned and castrated. Please have this done at least 30 days prior to weigh-in. Calves will be checked for proper dehorning and castration by members of the Junior Fair Livestock Committee at the December weigh-in.
Purebred Steer Division Information:
- Bring a copy of your steer’s registration paper with you to the December weigh-in. This copy needs to be turned in on registration day. If you don’t have the breed registration paper yet, bring a copy of the bill of sale (if applicable) then follow up with a copy of registration after it is received. This must be turned into the Extension Office by JANUARY 31, 2010 or the steer will be put in AOB class, NO EXCEPTIONS!
-
There must be a minimum of 4 steers of one particular breed to constitute a class. All others will be placed into an “All Other Breeds” class. There will be no minimum number in an AOB class. All registered steers will be recognized including appendix and low percentage. Once you have declared the steer to be shown in a purebred/AOB class, changes cannot be made at the fair
-
Each breed class winner will compete for overall purebred division champion/reserve. These top 2 purebred division champs will show against the other 6 crossbred division champs for overall grand and reserve steers.
Ohio State Fair Reminders: Ownership date for the State Fair steers is the same as our county registration. Any steer to be shown at the Ohio State Fair must be registered in December at the county registration site. Nose print cards are still required and are due to the State Fair by January 15. Exhibitors are responsible for taking and mailing their nose prints. Cards are available at the Extension Office or the day of registration. Completed cards require the 4-H Educator (if taking project in 4-H) or FFA Advisor’s (if taking project in FFA) signature.
2010 Muskingum County Fair Reminders:
-
You may exhibit one steer
-
You may only sell one lot of livestock in the large animal Junior Fair Livestock Sale.

Other Information:
-
If you know of others wishing to take a steer that has not in the past, please try to pass along the registration information to them.
-
Ownership and showing rights are considered lost if the steer has been cosigned or sold, even if the exhibitor “buys back” the steer.
-
Members in 4-H and FFA may not take the same project (ex: steer project #113).
-
To be a 4-H member in Muskingum County, the youth must reside in or attend a school in the Muskingum County school system (6 public, private or other religious based schools).
